Rim Country Trail System Vision & Projects

RCTF, in promoting and fundraising for The Payson Area Trails System (PATS) envisions a premier, sustainable trail network connecting all four quadrants of Payson and making trails accessible to everyone. By showcasing Rim Country’s natural beauty and bringing communities together, PATS aims to establish the region as a leading destination for outdoor recreation, conservation, and heritage.

RCTF Projects

  • Boulders Area Trail System. Phase 1 underway: Includes adopting the social trails and performing sustainable maintenance, and building 6 miles of new non-motorized trails along with development of two new trailheads on Granite Dells Rd.
  • Houston Mesa:  The locals are excited about all the trail opportunities that this area could provide. Currently, RCMBA has laid out just over 20 miles of proposed trails that the USFS Tonto National Forest will begin the NEPA (National Environmental Protection Act) Process.
  • Rim Country Connector Trail: This trail will connect the communities of Payson and Pine, while providing access to the Highline and the Arizona Trail. Layout has begun, further ground-truthing is underway. Once layout is finalized, this project will undergo the NEPA process by the USFS Tonto National Forest.

Project Goals

  • Provide access with ample parking and with good potential for new trails: Interesting terrain, good potential for trail loops, and sustainable trail design must all be considered to ensure future trail systems provide a variety of opportunities and improve trail connectivity throughout the community.
  • Provide connectivity to existing and new trails: Trail access throughout town will allow a variety of trip lengths and challenge levels for all trail users. Putting these communities on the map as a trails destination creates a sustainable economic advantage.
  • Create geographical balance: Sustainable trails provide residents with protection from catastrophic wildfires and access to natural spaces.
